What is the best freeware for converting DVD into AVI files?

I've got DVD copies of some video work I've acted in. I need to convert them into AVI files so I can make a video sampler of my work and post it to the web. My agent wants me to get the best quality AVI files I can, then she has someone who will convert it for web use. Thanks!!!!
